Professor
Timir Baran Samanta is an Organic Chemist by education
and Microbiologist by training. He received his Ph.D
degree from Calcutta
University in 1969 in Chemistry.
He worked all along at the interface of Chemistry
and Biology in Bose
Institute, Kolkata. His research
primarily centers around drug design and detoxification
of xenobiotics by microbes. He has contributed considerably
in this area (Samanta et al, Biochemical Biophysical
Research Communication 312: 75-79 (2003); Applied
Microbiology and Biotechnology 65: 281-286 (2004).
In fact he developed a strain of Aspergillus ocharaceus
TS which can be used for regioand stereospecific oxygenation
in steroid as well as for transformation of a pregnane
to a pro-oestrogen. In addition, a â-lactamase-free
penicillin amidase produced by Alcaligenes sp. was
evaluated as a potential biocatalyst for synthesis
of newer penicillins and production of 6-amino penicillanic
acid (6-APA) from PenG. He joined West
Bengal University of Technology (UTech) as Advisor, department of Biotechnology
in 2004. At UTech he is interested to develop microbial
model for mammalian drug design, molecular recognition
of chirals, in particular.
