Professor
Subrata Kumar Dey received his Ph.D. degree from
the
Department of Zoology, University
of Kalyani in 1982. He
was Reader at Presidency
College, Kolkata during 1996-2005.
Dr. Dey joined as Professor in the Department of
Biotechnology, West
Bengal University of Technology very recently.
His major research interests are in the area of
Human
Molecular Genetics and Radiation induced genomic
instability in mammalian cell lines. At present,
he has been working
on PCR based DNA diagnosis of Down syndrome, Turner
syndrome, ambiguous sex, and other chromosomal disorders
(Int. J. Hum. Genet. 2005, 5(3183–3186; Int.
J. Hum. Genet. 4(3),215-217, 2004). The main objective
of his work is to make marker based linkage map of
chromosome 21 to identify the loci responsible for
the pathogenesis of Down syndrome. Additionally,
Prof. Dey is also in the process of developing an
ideal
set of microsatellite markers for prenatal diagnosis
of Down syndrome. He has also received financial
assistance
from University Grants Commission and Nuclear Science
Centre to carry out different research projects.
As
he is interested in chromosome 21, he is also planning
to work on the molecular genetics of Alzheimer’s
disease. Prof. Dey is also involved in extension
activities.
He is providing free diagnosis and counseling service
to patients suffering from common chromosomal disorders.
Majority of referred patients are children who live
below poverty line and are
unable to bear the high cost of karyotyping. Till
date, he has diagnosed more than 200 patients who
are usually referred from different Medical Colleges,
Health Institutes and private practitioners of Kolkata
and adjoining areas.
