Other Activities

Post-B.Sc Integrated Ph.D program in Molecular Biology
The department of Biotechnology at UTech has introduced a post-B.Sc Integrated Ph.D. course in Molecular Biology in the academic session 2005 - 2006 with the intake of 5 students.

The department of Biotechnology at UTech has become a hub of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi. The National Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) for JRF of Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India was conducted by our department in the Eastern region of the country on June 8, 2005. The Bioinformatics competence (BINC) test was held here again on November 15-16, 2005. It’s pertinent to mention here that one student of first batch of M.Tech. in Biotehnology has qualified in the national BET test of DBT, New Delhi and she is now working as JRF in IICB, Kolkata.

Exchange of students / Exchange of credit
Exchange of students under credit exchange program took place between UTech and University of Pune in June, 2005. About 23 students from Pune University and 12 students of UTech took part in this program.

Project work of Biotechnology students
Students of 3rd and 4th semester in Biotechnology do their project work both in house at UTech and different national laboratories like Bose Institute, NICED, IICB, Kolkata and multinational industry like Nicholas Piramal, Mumbai, United Breweries Technical Centre, Bangalore, Persistent Systems, Pune.

Earn while you learn program
Students at UTech avail of the above scheme introduced quite recently and the response from the students is encouraging.

Service to Industry
As a part to establish University / Industry partnership, the Department of Biotechnology (Utech) had a first hand opportunity to extend its activities in promoting an industry / Institution joint venture. The industry had the option in exploiting the intellectual support of the Department of Biotechnology, Utech. Recently, a city-based confectionery (DREAM BAKE PVT. LTD.), popularly known for its trade name “Monginis”, approached the department of Biotechnology with a problem related to their contaminated packed cake samples. An interim report on the source and identity of the contamination was consequently prepared by the Department of Biotechnology, in collaboration with the Entomology Division at the Zoological Survey of India, Alipore, Kolkata. This included microscopic examination of the samples and subsequent photographs taken to support the observations made by one of the faculty members from the Department of Biotechnology.

Research
Ongoing projects
