  Project Details

1. Title: Genetic Resource Management of East Calcutta Wetland.
Funding: Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi.
Scheme: DST Fast Track Scheme for Young Scientist.

This project involves the microbial resource mapping of East Calcutta Wetland. It reveals a rich bacterial resource at that site. It has resulted in isolation of 22 bacterial isolates of which 9 are protease producing; 9 are oil utilizing while most of them can uptake metal as evident from EDXRF and TEM results.
2. Title:
Ionizing radiation induced DNA DSB studies of methanogens isolated from East Calcutta wetland.
  Funding: UGC-DAE Consortium
  Scheme: UGC DAE CSR

This project aims at isolation of methanogens from East Calcutta Wetland. Following isolation they would be characterized based on their DNA DSB repairing ability, 16S rDNA gene sequence as well as Rad gene sequence.
3. Title:
Trace element profiling of East Calcutta Wetland for phylogeny based growth condition prediction.
  Funding: UGC-DAE Consortium
Scheme: Experimental program at IOP, Bhuvaneshwar.

This project intends to do the trace element profiling of different sites of ECW to predict the growth condition of as yet uncultivated microbe which have been identified using culture independent approach. It also intends to evaluate the ongoing bioremedial activity at the Bheris (waste water fed fisheries).
4. Title:
Development of sulphate reducing bioremediation package for Jaduguda Effluent discharge.
  Funding: DAE
  Scheme: BRNS

This aims at isolation of efficient sulphate reducing bacterial consortium from ECW as well as Jaduguda. These would be done following phylogenetic prediction of putative sulphate reducers. These would be used for checking their reducing efficiency. Consortium for reducing non complex sulphates is required. It would be immobilized and its reducing efficiency would be checked both at lab scale and at tailing ponds at Jaduguda.
5. Title: Understanding the scopes of value added waste water management through fisheries.
Funding: Jointly by WBUT, India and EPRC, Bangladesh
  Scheme: Pre-Proposal Project
This aims at analyzing the physico-chemical and microbiological parameters of waste water fed fish ponds at ECW and Dhaka. It intends to compare the two and analyze the variation, if any. It also would be used to address the problem of fish production failure at Dhaka as compared to ECW.
